Permanent Residence

Transitioning Temporary Foreign Workers to Permanent Resident Status

Depending on your circumstances, there could be different approaches to transition from foreign worker to permanent resident status:

Family Sponsorship

  • Express Entry

This is the fastest way to obtain permanent resident status, typically six months from date of filing. This system administers the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker, and Federal Skilled Trades economic immigration programs.

  • Provincial Nominee Programs

Each province has its own eligibility criteria for both employers and foreign workers, depending on that province’s labour market needs and growth objectives. They will also have distinct quotas for each of the categories under each province’s respective programs. We can assess circumstances and assess eligibility to determine whether one of these programs will benefit your organization and your employees.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents may sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, parents, grandparents and dependent children for permanent residence. Although the circumstances might seem straight forward, the applications are document-heavy, and processing time can be lengthy. In addition to ensuring applications are complete, we also advise as to the best way for families to be together in Canada while applications are in process.

Starting a Business in Canada

There is no longer an investor program in Canada at the federal level. In most cases, business class applicants must also run the business that they wish to establish in Canada.

If running a business is attractive to you, options to consider would be:
  • Start-Up Visa

This category requires applicants to attract support from a business incubator or angel investor designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Work Authorization can be obtained while awaiting finalization of the PR application.

  • Provincial Nominee Programs

We can review circumstances and assess eligibility to determine whether one of these programs will benefit your organization and your employees.
